How to use this chart
- Work backwards from the time you have to leave. Write the time in the field at the top, then check the steps would fit if each one took the time it actually takes on a normal morning.
- Put the steps in the order that avoids backtracking: clothes before breakfast, so that nothing gets spilled on school uniform, and bag and shoes last, by the door.
- Move jobs to the evening if the morning is tight. Packing the bag the night before is the usual one, and it can be a step on the bedtime checklist instead.
- The finish-time column is optional. Some children like to see how long the morning really takes, and a few days of written times show which step is the slow one.
- Choose portrait if the chart will hang on a narrow space such as a door, or landscape for a fridge. The boxes and the text resize to the new shape.
Questions
Should the routine be the same on weekends?
Many families keep a shorter list for weekends. Print a second chart with the days set to Saturday and Sunday and fewer steps.
What does the Done at column do?
It is a blank column on every row for writing a clock time by hand. It is useful for older children who want to see how long the morning takes.
Can the child tick the boxes themselves?
Yes. The boxes are large enough to tick quickly with a pen. For younger children, a sticker in the box is easier than a tick.
What does the Out of the door by field do?
It is a line to write the time you want to leave, so the target is on the chart where everyone can see it.
