How to use this chart
- Keep to the steps that really happen every day, in the order they happen. Five to eight steps is plenty for a small child, and each step should be something you would point to rather than explain.
- The pictures are ordinary emoji. Put one at the start of each line, then a space, then the words, and the page splits them into a picture column and a label. Your device's keyboard has an emoji button that makes this quick.
- Switch the pictures off for a plainer chart with words only, once the child reads the steps or if emoji look different on the printer you are using.
- Go through the chart together at the same moment each day, for example after dinner, and let the child colour in the star. A routine that finishes with the child holding the pencil tends to be one they remember.
- Laminate the sheet or slide it into a plastic wallet if you want to reuse it with a dry-erase marker, and print a new one when you want to change the steps.
Questions
How do I change a picture?
Replace the emoji at the start of the line. Any emoji works, and a line without one simply has no picture. The step still prints.
Are the pictures the same on every printer?
The picture is drawn from your device's emoji font, so its style can differ between Windows, Apple and Android. The meaning stays the same. If you prefer, turn the pictures off.
Why only a star per step and not times?
The chart is for young children who follow the order of things more than the clock. If you want a clock time as well, use the morning routine chart, which has a time column.
Can I make a chart for one part of the day?
Yes: type only the morning steps or only the bedtime steps and change the title. A short chart for one moment is easier to follow.
