How to use this chart
- Choose the number of spaces by how long the child can wait. Ten spaces can be filled in a week of daily stickers, while thirty is a month of effort and needs a smaller reward on the way.
- Name one clear goal at the top, written as something that can be seen, such as put shoes on by the door. A chart with one goal is easier to hold to than a chart that tracks everything.
- Write the reward on the chart in the line at the bottom before the first sticker goes on. Small and soon beats large and distant for most children.
- Number the spaces so that the child can see how far there is to go. Turn the numbers off for a plainer sheet, or if you are going to cover the spaces with large stickers.
- Print a fresh sheet when this one is full and let the child choose the next goal with you. Finishing a chart and starting another keeps it from feeling endless.
Questions
Which size is best?
There is no right number. Ten is a good first chart, twenty suits a goal over a couple of weeks, and thirty suits a longer goal with an agreed reward on the way.
Can I use real stickers?
Yes, that is what the spaces are for. The circles and squares are sized for ordinary round stickers, and the star spaces fit a star sticker or a coloured-in star.
Can I use it for more than one goal?
Print one chart for each goal. If you put two goals on one sheet, the count towards the reward becomes unclear.
Does it fit on one page for 30 spaces?
Yes. Thirty spaces make five rows of six on a portrait page of Letter or A4, and the spaces stay large.
