How to use this chart
- Name the columns for the times that matter in your day. Morning, midday, afternoon and evening are a start, and some families prefer after waking, after meals and before bed.
- Colour in a star each time the child uses the potty, whichever column that falls in. A star for trying is fine too; the chart is what your family decides it is.
- Hang the chart at the child's height near the bathroom so that colouring in is part of the visit, and keep the crayons beside it.
- Keep the reward small and quick to hand over, and write it on the line at the bottom so the child can see it. When the chart is full, print a new one for the next week.
- Nothing here is guidance on when a child is ready or how long it takes. Children differ, and your child's doctor or nurse is the person to ask about readiness.
Questions
Is this medical advice?
No. It is a printable tracking sheet. For questions about readiness or difficulties, ask your child's doctor or nurse.
Can I count accidents on it?
The chart is designed for stars, so it only counts the successes. If you want to note anything else, use the margin or a different sheet.
Can I change the days to dates?
Yes. The rows are text, so type Mon 3, Tue 4 and so on instead of the weekday names.
Why a week at a time?
A page with seven rows is quick to fill and quick to finish. When it is done, print the next one with a fresh start date.
