How to use this chart
- Choose the number of rows to match the goal. Twelve rows suits a month of a chapter a day if the child reads short books, while sixteen rows suits a longer stretch.
- Write the title in the first column in the child's own writing, or ask the child to say it and write it for them. A list of titles is something the child can read back at the end.
- Use the minutes column if your school asks for reading time, and leave it blank otherwise. The columns are only as strict as you make them.
- Colour in the star once the row is finished, not before. A book started and not finished can be left with an empty star until it is done.
- Put the log in the place where reading happens, a bedside table or the reading corner, with a pencil next to it. Filling the row in right after reading is easier than remembering later.
Questions
Do rows have to be whole books?
No. A row can be a book, a chapter, a magazine or twenty minutes of reading. Decide what a row is and keep it the same.
Can I use it for an adult reader?
Yes. Change the title and leave out the reward line.
Does it count minutes for me?
No. The sheet only has space to write them by hand. It does not add anything up.
Where is the reward line?
At the bottom of the page. Type the reward and it prints below the rows, together with the goal line.
