How to use this chart
- Fill in the fixed things first: a club, a camp, a visit or a standing time at the pool. They go in their day and block, and the free blocks that remain are the ones to plan together.
- Keep a quiet-time block in the list even if the children are older. A set time in the afternoon with no screens, a book or a game on the floor, takes a lot of the friction out of long days.
- Let the child write or draw their own entries in the open boxes. A schedule they have filled in themselves gets looked at more than one given to them.
- Rename the blocks to match your home. Morning, afternoon and evening are enough for some families, while others want separate rows for chores, reading and outside time.
- Print one sheet per week and keep the finished ones. At the end of the summer, a pile of sheets is a quick record of what the weeks looked like.
Questions
Does it include clock times?
Not as printed text. Type times into the block names, for example Lunch 12:00, or write times into the open boxes by hand.
Can I use it all year, not only in summer?
Yes. It works for any week that does not follow a school timetable, such as a half term or a holiday.
How many blocks fit?
Up to nine on a landscape page. With nine rows the boxes are still large enough to write a short note in each.
Should every box be filled?
No. Empty boxes are open time, and they are part of the plan. Leave some on purpose.
