How to use this chart
- List the chores in the order you want them to travel. The first person gets the first chore in week one, the second person the second chore, and the pattern moves one place along each week.
- Match the number of chores to the number of people if you can. With five chores and four people, one chore is skipped each week and comes round later; with equal numbers every chore is done every week.
- Pick a rotation length that matches a school term or a month. Four weeks gives each of four people a full turn at each of four chores, and the page then goes back to the top.
- Put the chart where the whole family sees it, and tick or initial a square when a chore is done. The chart prints the plan; the ticking happens in pen on the paper.
- If a chore needs a particular age or strength, take it off the rotation and give it to a named person on a separate line in the chart title or on the fridge.
Questions
How does the rotation work?
The chores are placed in the table in the order you listed them, and every row starts one chore further along than the row above. The next week moves everyone along again.
What if there are more people than chores?
The chores repeat around the table, so two people may share the same chore in a week. Add a chore such as Set the table to give everyone something different.
Can I rotate for a shorter or longer period?
Choose between two and eight weeks. Eight weeks is the most that fits the page with readable chore names.
Can adults be on the chart?
Yes, the rows are just names. Many households include the adults so the weekly jobs are visibly shared.
